Who are you, where do you work and what do you do?
I’m Marta Leszczynska, Training & Recruitment Manager.
How did you get to where you are today?
I started as a trainee bus driver and progressed over the years through various positions, including allocator, staff manager, a secondment to the schedules department and many more.
I was very recently appointed as Training and Recruitment Manager, and prior to this, I held the position of Operations Manager for 8 years across various depots, with the last 3 years spent overseeing two depots. This new role is another challenge for me and further development of my career.
I am not afraid to take on any task put in front of me and always strive to deliver superior results. I believe that the various roles and locations I’ve worked in across Transport UK London Bus have given me the best opportunities for my own development as a People Manager.
Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are
today?
I experienced many challenges throughout the years. I was misunderstood by many people, and as a female I was not accepted as a manager straightaway by some colleagues in some depots.
How did you overcome these challenges?
This did not stop me and instead spurred me to work harder at my communication. I also always show my good heart and never treat my coworkers without respect. I had to change my style of communication and sometimes stop and think a bit longer about how to approach some situations.
What do you love about the bus sector?
I always say that no two days are ever the same. I work with people, and we cannot predict all scenarios which life throws at us. My favourite saying is ‘we have colourful lives as every minute is different and can teach us new things as we go along.’
What does a typical day look like?
For a few months I have been in the training department, and I have a lot of interaction with new employees and drivers’ trainers. The days are always enjoyable and it’s a pleasure to welcome new members of our Transport UK family and help them gain the skills they will need to carry them through their career with us.
What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus sector?
This is an interesting industry if you like collaborating with people and seeing many places, come and join us.
What has been your career highlight in bus so far?
I have been in the industry for over 17 years. There are no limits, and we work with many characters which can develop us as a better person and a community. I love interaction with so many colleagues.
What three things could be done to improve the industry for women?
One important thing is the accessible toilets for local bus drivers. And being more flexible for single parents.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Still with my beloved Transport UK as Training and Recruitment Manager.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I would love to see more employees taking part in simple wellbeing challenges and create stronger community.
